What is processed food?
Wikipedia describes “processed food” as any food that is changed from its natural, raw state. Under that definition, a lot of food we eat is processed. However, most of us tend to define processed food in a much narrower sense.
For us, “processed food” is food which has been chemically altered through additives such as flavors, flavor enhancers, binders, colors, fillers, preservatives, stabilizers, etc., or which has been manufactured through a combination of other methods. Generally speaking, if the ingredients aren’t “natural,” we consider it to be processed.
The truth is, processing has made the world’s food supply much safer to eat and has made the storage of food a much healthier and more viable option. Processing kills pathogens and extends the shelf-life of food. Processing has made it possible to transport food to famine stricken areas, helping to relieve suffering worldwide.
Despite these benefits, I wouldn’t classify processed foods as a healthy food option. A diet exclusive in processed foods will almost certainly lead to disease. Our bodies are designed to eat natural, raw foods.
If you must grab that slice of pizza or that chocolate chip cookie, consider looking at Herbalife’s targeted nutrition product line, which is designed to minimize the impact of these unhealthy choices.
Think back to when we were hunter-gatherers. Before we invented agriculture, we ate over 200 different plants, fruits and nuts and as many as a hundred different game animals, snakes, worms and insects. There was precious little starch or sugar in any of them. Grains like wheat and root vegetables, which are phenomenally high in starch are the creations of agriculture introduced 10,000 years ago. That feels like a long time to us, but it’s a moment in the evolution of our digestive tracts. For a long time, we could barely harvest enough of the stuff to survive. But now we have a vast excess and in combination with sedentary living and saturated fat, it’s killing us.
Foods are processed to make them taste better
Most people who have eaten processed food won’t deny that processing food makes it taste better. That’s intentional. Foods have added sugar, salt, flavoring and coloring to make them more appealing to consumers. Why? So people buy them. Most people prefer to eat food that tastes good and the food manufacturers know that. Processed foods have been carefully designed to taste good. Processed food purchased at the supermarket is no different.
Processed foods are made for consumers’ convenience and taste buds. However, most people would agree that their health is worth a little more effort and a little less processing. I think of fast-food places as factory farms for people. We go there by the millions and consume more calories than we can possibly burn off, while not getting the nutrition we need to feed our body properly. Stop getting in your own way. We should eat as many raw foods as we can daily. Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to our meals and snacks is an easy way to accomplish this.
Let’s face it, eliminating all processed foods is probably not going to happen for most of us. But we can make better food choices and supplement our diets with missing components.
Herbalife’s supplements can help. Whether you are trying to lose weight or are looking for processed food alternatives, Herbalife has an array of healthy food options.
Opt for an apple over apple juice, a baked potato or salad over french fries. Choose whole grain bread over white bread. Take time to read food labels. Chances are, if you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t be eating it. We chose processed foods with a very short list of ingredients; the longer the list, the more processing involved and the more nutrients lost. Start eating healthier foods and less processed foods. Herbalife has helped millions lose weight and create a healthy lifestyle.
Where does your food come from? Is it made in a plant or grown on a plant? There is no such thing as junk food. It’s either junk or it’s food.
Our bodies are amazing organisms, capable of extraordinary things. They are designed to filter out toxins at an astounding rate. They have a highly sophisticated defense system. They have an amazing ability to recover from serious damage. The key lies in providing our bodies with the necessary building blocks to accomplish what they were designed to do – keep us alive.
Diet sodas are billed as being good for Type 2 diabetics and other blood sugar challenged types, but they are not beneficial.
Because of something called the “cephalic phase response,” your body tastes the sweetness and even though there are no calories to shuttle, the brain triggers a release of insulin from the pancreas and a “sugar is coming, stop burning fat response” from the liver.
The result is the usual array of insulin-related problems, including an increased urge to eat, an increased tendency toward fat storage, and a confusion of the body’s built in caloric monitoring systems, all of which compel you to plump up and eat even more unhealthy stuff later.
Herbalife has answers to these challenges. A healthy soda alternative can be either an Herbalife Lift-off or various tea options, all with minimal sugar and calories.
Diet sodas and the chemically derived artificial sweeteners they contain may act as neurotoxins and have been linked to headaches, memory problems, anxiety, depression, skin irritations, menstrual problems, joint pain and more.
Artificial sweeteners and colors tend to drive cravings for more sweet and hyper-flavored foods and reduce your ability to properly taste more subtle flavors or natural foods, perverting your palate and dissuading you from making other healthy changes to your diet because nothing natural tastes the way it ought to.
Frequent sipping or gulping of diet soda blunts your thirst, reducing your intake of pure water, which is a much better choice for hydration and helps to clear toxins from your system, versus further polluting it. The acids in diet soda, and regular soda for that matter, eat away at the enamel on your teeth. You have to walk over 4.5 miles to burn off one 20-oz soda.
A 14 year study of 66,118 women published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered:
Diet soda raised the risk of diabetes more than sugar-sweetened sodas
Women who drink one 12-oz diet soda a day had a 33% increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Women who drank one 20-oz diet soda a day had a 66% increased risk of type 2 diabetes
Women who drank diet sodas drank twice as much as those who drank sugar sweetened sodas.
Artificial sweeteners are more addictive and are hundreds to thousands of times sweeter than regular soda
How can that happen?
Artificial sweeteners activate our genetically programmed preference for sweet tastes more than any other substance. They trick our metabolism into thinking sugar is on its way, causing the body to pump out insulin, the fat storage hormone, which lays down more belly fat.Artificial sweeteners confuse and slow down our metabolism so we burn fewer calories. They make us hungrier and cause us to crave even more sugar and starchy carbohydrates.
The bottom line
Diet drinks are not good substitutes for sugar sweetened drinks. They increase cravings, weight gain and the risk of type 2 diabetes. And, they are addictive.Do your own research on diet sodas and how it negatively affects your body.Drinking soda is incredibly expensive, an important point for anyone who protest that they can’t afford high quality food or decent nutritional supplements.
Herbalife has unbelievable soda alternatives to help you lose weight and speed up your metabolism. After reading these scary statistics, instead of reaching for a diet soda, reach for a healthy Herbalife soda alternative.
Inaccuracies in counting calories and estimating portion sizes are two of the biggest obstacles to successful weight loss. Despite even the best efforts, the scale refuses to budge.
The beauty of meal replacements is that portion control is taken care of. They are designed to provide great nutrition within a defined number of calories. On top of that, they are simple and convenient for today’s busy lifestyles and healthy dieting.
Portion control is one of the primary strategies for controlling calorie intake. Many people don’t take the time to count calories or to weigh and measure foods. If they do, they usually stop after a while, thinking they can estimate portions fairly well. Portion sizes may then begin to creep up, and weigh loss starts to slow down. More often than not, portion sizes will then gradually increase and the rate of weight loss slows.
Most people tend to forget that everything counts, including any fats used in cooking or foods consumed while standing at the sink or while driving a car.
Meal replacement shakes from Herbalife are a great strategy for weight management
Meal replacement shakes from Herbalife deliver healthy ingredients and taste great while helping to create a healthy diet. Whether you adhere to a gluten free diet, a high protein diet or something in between, a meal replacement shake can help curb your appetite while providing your body with all of its nutritional needs.
When it comes to your health, a meal replacement shake from Herbalife will provide not only a healthy diet alternative but provide the path to healthy living. Shakes can be customized too. Mix with milk (soy milk works great too), add a favorite fruit, or toss in some extra protein powder, and a personalized meal can be made in minutes. Convenient, delicious, healthy, portion controlled meals, and they’re cheaper than processed, non-nutritious foods. What more could a dieter ask for?

The problem with many diets, to include a low carb diet, is that they take too much time and are too complicated.
There is a large amount of planning involved with a healthy diet. Even when following the diet, the weight does not come off very quickly. In fact, most of the time a person will only lose one or two pounds a week when first starting a diet. This can be disheartening and lead to the oh-so-familiar yo-yo effect.
When someone steps on the scale and sees a two pound weight loss when they think it should be more, they are likely to spiral out of control, quit the diet and resume their poor eating habits again.
The road to weight loss begins with a simple step: that you motivate yourself to take and transform into a difficult and never ending journey of discipline and weight loss, motivation and self-improvement.
Healthy weight loss
What many people don’t realize is that losing one or two pounds a week is the healthiest way to lose weight. Losing this amount sets reasonable expectations and leads to achievable goals. If you are carrying quite a bit of extra weight, these numbers can be increased slowly, but in all likelihood, striving to lose more than two or three pounds a week with your healthy diet is a surefire way to:
Burn muscle rather than fat
Become discouraged and give up
Ensure you are getting a proper balance of protein, carbs and fat, yes fat. Don’t get caught up in those low carb diets. Your body demands a certain amount of carbs, good carbs.
Problems with diets
One of the biggest problems that people have when dieting and trying to lose weight, is tracking their calories and exercising enough. If the majority of your diet is fruits and vegetables, the calories that you are taking in are minimal. You should begin losing weight quite quickly.
Using Herbalife’s super engineered foods and supplements will magnify your success. These products combine cutting-edge science with delicious shakes and snacks, so you can shed unwanted pounds.
Whatever happens, realize that this is a difficult and time consuming process and that you are the key to your success. Rather than be overwhelmed, follow your plan by setting small, achievable goals which you are able to meet, and focus on them one at a time.

Lose weight. Eat Breakfast.
What’s for breakfast? Coffee? Most mornings we barely glace at the kitchen. Fixing breakfast takes up precious time that’s in short supply. But there’s ample evidence that the simple act of eating breakfast, every day, is a big part of losing weight. Lots of weight.
People skip breakfast thinking they’re cutting calories, but by mid-morning and lunch, that person is starved. Breakfast skippers replace calories during the day with mindless nibbling, binging at lunch and dinner. They set themselves up for failure.
Eating breakfast should be a daily habit and is an important strategy to lose weight and keep it off. Another problem a lot of people have is eating a breakfast loaded with carbohydrates and it creates blood sugar issues.

When you don't eat breakfast, you're actually fasting for 15-20 hours, so you're not producing enzymes needed to metabolize fat to lose weight.
If breakfast is the most imporant meal of the day. It's best to make wise food choices. This is where Herbalife products and supplements can support your healthy living choices.
Why you need to eat a protein Breakfast
A breakfast high in protein content takes longer to get digested, thus keeping you feeling full for longer. It lowers the levels of the hormone ghrelin in the bloodstream that triggers sensations of hunger, thus establishing healthy eating habits.
Studies show that it is true that carbohydrates provide energy. A bagel or donut will quickly raise your blood sugar levels. This signals the body to produce high quantities of insulin, which as a consequence causes sugar levels to come crashing down, resulting in feelings of hunger, lowered concentration span and reduced energy. Carbohydrates have a major effect on insulin levels, whereas fat has no effect on insulin, and protein has a mild effect. High protein breakfasts lead to a gradual, moderate increase in blood sugar that requires lower quantities of insulin. This ensures that the body has a steady supply of glucose for a longer duration and the low levels of insulin secretion also helps the cells to maintain greater cardio vascular health.
A high protein Herbalife breakfast shake will put you on a successful path toward weight loss and healthy living.
There might be something wrong with your inner tube and it could be making you sick and fat. You may not even realize you have a problem, but if you have health concerns of any kind or if you are overweight, your inner tube could be the root cause. Of course, I’m not talking about a beach toy. I mean the inner tube of life, your digestive system.
It is likely that you suffer from, or have suffered from, some type of digestive disorder – irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, reflux, gas and other things to gross to mention. And you are not alone.
More than 100 million Americans have digestive problems.
Two of the top five selling drugs in America are for digestive problems and they cost us billions and billions of dollars. There are more than 200 over-the-counter (OTC) remedies for digestive disorders, and many can create additional digestive problems.
Visits for intestinal disorders are among the most common reasons for trips to primary care physicians. Also, digestive problems wreak havoc in the entire body, leading to allergies, arthritis, rashes, acne, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, dementia, cancer and more.
Having a healthy gut means more than simply being free of annoyances like bloating or heartburn. It is absolutely central to your health. It is connected to everything that happens in your body.
How your gut keeps you healthy or makes you ill.
The health of your gut determines what nutrients are absorbed and what toxins and allergens are kept out. There is 500 species and 3 pounds of bacteria in your gut which form a huge chemical factory that helps you digest your food, regulate hormones, excrete toxins and produce vitamins and other healing compounds that keep your gut and your body healthy.
Remember, your gut must break down all the food you eat into its individual components, separate out the vitamins and minerals, and shuttle everything across the one-cell-thick layer into your bloodstream and nourish your body and brain.
Your gut has quite a lot to manage. Even in a perfect world, it is hard to keep all of this in balance. In our modern world there are endless insults that can knock our digestive system off balance, making it much more difficult to maintain excellent digestive health.
Problems, as mentioned above, can range from annoying to debilitating. Herbalife’s digestive health products support healthy digestion and elimination, helping to ensure your internal system runs smoothly every day. Let’s prioritize your digestive system!
Preventing heart disease has very little to do with simply lowering cholesterol with statin drugs. We believe we are treating the causes of heart disease by lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure or lowering blood sugar with medication. But, the real question is what causes high cholesterol in the first place. It is certainly not a medication deficiency.
Most of the blame lies with the way you eat, how much you exercise, how you deal with stress and the effects of environmental toxins. These are the underlying causes of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar. That is what determines your risk of heart disease, not a lack of medication.
Dietary recommendations to help prevent cardio-vascular disease
The first step in preventing heart disease is to eat a healthy diet. Some practical tips:
To avoid the blood sugar imbalances that increase your risk for heart disease, eat protein with every meal, even at breakfast. This will help you to avoid sudden increases in your blood sugar. Herbalife products can help!
Combine protein, fat and carbohydrates in every meal. Never eat carbohydrates alone.
For the same reasons, avoid white flour and sugar
Avoid all processed junk food, including sodas, juices and diet drinks, which impact your blood sugar and lipid metabolism. Liquid sugar calories are the biggest contributors to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Reduce saturated fats
Eliminate all hydrogenated fats which is found in margarine, shortening and processed oils, as well as many baked goods and processed foods.
Avoid or reduce alcohol, which can increase triglycerides fat in the liver, and create blood sugar imbalances.
Don’t allow yourself to get hungry. Graze, don’t gorge. Eat every three to four hours to keep your insulin and blood sugar normal.
Try not to eat three hours before bed.
Have a good protein breakfast every day. Start with an Herbalife protein shake.
Supplements can help reduce your risk
Supplements are important. Along with a healthy diet and exercise program, they can dramatically affect your risk of cardio vascular disease. Combining these together can have the greatest impact on your cholesterol. Remember, it is almost impractical to receive the daily amount of nutrients and vitamins your body demands by food alone. Supplements play a vital role. Start with a multi-vitamin and omega 3.
We have all heard about the importance of healthy fats. The evidence is in. Some fats are essential for optimal health. And the king of the good fats is the omega 3s. Unfortunately, most Americans are deficient in these critical fats.
Why omega 3 fats are important
This means when you don’t get enough omega 3 fats, messages can’t be properly communicated from one cell to another. If you’re not getting enough omega 3s, your body, including your brain, just can’t work to its optimum potential.
If I said to you, “eat more fiber and potentially live a longer, healthier life,” what would your response be? Would you say, “fiber is full of carbs and is going to create weight gain?” Believe it or not, fiber can help you lose weight, is found in many delicious foods, and can help you avoid common diseases.
This article summarizes a recent American Journal of Medicine study, and vividly shows that most Americans don’t get enough fiber. It also provides guidelines on how much fiber you should consume daily and mentions the types of foods that are filled with fiber.
An earlier study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, found that a diet high in fiber reduced fatalities from heart disease, respiratory illness, or infectious diseases by 56% in men and 59% in women.
In addition to my multi-vitamin (and other supplements), I personally take Herbalife’s Garden7 every day to ensure that I get the proper amounts of fruits and vegetables.
Bottom line, eat more fiber.
